Well its a bit nippy here this AM with temps in the low 40's. We have the portable electric heater on as the cabin was cold yesterday when we arrived despite the temps in the low 70's. It seems there were some cold mornings while we were gone and with the cabin being closed up it took some time to once again warm everything up. The dishes and silverware were ice cold as was the sheets in between the blankets. It will take a couple of days to bring everything up to normal once again and we are slated for some 70's all this week, oh well it was great to get back home again after sleeping in several different beds the past several days.
We woke Tuesday morning in beautiful Shenandoah Valley in the quaint town of Woodstock, Va. at youngest sister Dee and husband Mike's gorgeous house. The vista around the house is postcard material with the huge dairy barn and fields in the background nestled in between the mountains and this morning a huge hot air balloon in festive colors was overhead as we sat at the kitchen table for our breakfast. After eating I headed out to picked jalapeno and green peppers from her garden which grows such magnificent veggies. I kid her about the soil as its rock hard when dry but its very fertile as is the abundant of veggies; especially peppers of all kinds and tomato's. I loaded up a couple of bags of both before we left as they have already stocked up their freezer with both.
The trip south saw us stop for a quick visit in Harrisonburg to see Mike in the hospital as he had a knee replacement surgery on Monday. He looked great and was out of bed and awaiting his first physical therapy. We stayed for but a few minutes and then headed south on I-81 with a few stops to walk and for lunch at Mickey D's. We have found their chicken bacon salad to be quite tasty and now after trying it in Bowling Green, Ohio for the first decided to try it again in Hillsville, N.C. We made a grocery stop in Galax as we are expecting quests over the next couple of weeks as they divide their time between the Tracy's and our place. The cabin was as we had left it except for the interior was like an ice box. We quickly opened all of the closed blinds, windows and doors to let in the sunshine and the warmth.
We unloaded and unpacked and I headed out to hand water the gardens as we received no rain while we were gone. The heavy dews at night and the cool temps kept everything alive but the green beans hadn't grown as much as I had liked and the lettuce was still growing but was needing a drink as well. We took off on a hike to the top of the mountain and visited with Ben and Laura who bought the Cline cabin. They showed us in and we saw where they are making several renovations and one was the addition of a cooling/ heating system that requires no duct work. I'm going to investigate that further as that maybe just what we need for the hot months. I don't think we will need the heat as we go back to Florida for the cold winters. We walked on across the top of the mountains and could feel the cool air of the evenings starting to permeate the hike. We saw the Brownings who were out for an evening hike and walked back with them to their place. We visited just for a moment as the air was starting to cool down especially on the tree lined back road.
Nancy fixed tacos for supper as we had plenty of Michigan tomato's and Virginia jalapeno's and yellow peppers to add to the toppings. Delicious to say the least. We settled into the news and social media and I caught up on some correspondence. It wasn't long after a hot shower that I was ready for some reading before the sand man calleth, LATER
