Well Friday was a travel day for us as we left the cabin for Northern Virginia. The sun was out shining and the temps were in the low 60's, wow where was that sun for the past 2 days. The trip started with us heading north on the Blue Ridge Parkway and the views of the mountains with the fog and mist were awesome. We made a garbage stop along the way then headed into Galax. Nancy dislikes the interstate travel so we headed out towards Hillsville onto Route 221 through the mountains on a 2 lane road.
We stopped in Floyd, Va. which was settled by hippies many years ago and the remnants of their lifestyle in dress is still evident. We saw a few people walking along the streets that still emphasized that period. We have to walk every hour and a half due to some prior health issues with a blood clot in my leg. The old homes in the area are awesome and the town is so quaint with the many shops. The Wood Brothers who are a Nascar Racing Team are located there as well.
After our walk we continued on towards Bent Mountain which is true to its name. This mountain is definitely the crooked road next to Lombard Street in San Francisco. We stopped in Roanoke for gas and then at Subway for lunch. We found our way through the town an onto I-581 which took us to I-81. We traveled on that roadway for a couple hours to Harrisonburg where we exited onto Route 11 which parallels I-81 all of the way to Winchester and beyond.
We stopped in some of the small towns that were established in the late 1700's and we visited some of the old building, cemeteries and Churches and of course Nancy took pictures of many. We arrived at sister Dee's house around 4:30 to warm temp's in the low 90's but with some cloud cover. We observed lots of produce along the road from local gardens. The gardens here in this area seem to be healthy and producing. Dee had ton's of red ripe tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, onions(which surprised us as she doesn't eat them) and Zucchini squashes and she has insisted we take some with us when we leave on Monday.
We ate some of the sourdough bread and had a glass of the vino while waiting for the rest of the gang to arrive for a supper of pulled pork, potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans and German chocolate cake for dessert. The older group entertained ourselves with the game of LOGO for 2 rounds of which the gals won both. We stayed playing, talking until after midnight when it was shower time and then lights.
Well it was good to meet Martin's girlfriend Rosie(RoseMary) who just got back from China where she was a teacher for a year. Pat, Keith and their grandsons Dylan and Ian as well as Paw Paw and his friend Adeline were here and stayed late as well. Paw Paw entertained with one of his piano recitals around midnight with song He Touched Me, Later
