Friday Morning in the mountains

Well Thursday started out to be just about a perfect Fall day with cool temps to start and then by late afternoon very mild and almost warm enough for short britches and shirts. I made a barn run over to the Dalton Farm for a bale of hay and horse droppings for my garden about mid morning and then after a guacamole salad for lunch we took off on our daily hike to the top of the mountain.

I started the day around a 7'ish roll out due to the late evening pickle ball play and workout. My muscles and joints were a little stiff so it took awhile for me to get going. After my quiet time and the posting of this ramble I ventured outside to a slight chill in the air but the skies looked blue up through the tree tops. The birds were happy and singing as if this was a spring morning. I had a load of apple and peach wood branches in the back of the truck so I commenced to cutting them up into small pieces for my meat smoker. Fruit wood makes the best smoke for any and all kinds of meats.

After lunch we headed to the top of the mountain in the bright sunshine. Nancy took lots of pictures as many of the maple and gum trees are showing their fall beauty. We saw no one on top and headed on down through the back woods. I headed back up the mountain on the golf cart to retrieve the rotor tiller from Norm's shed as I want to work the manure and leaves into the soil for the winter for next summer's garden. I saw our neighbors who purchased the old Todd place, Donnie and Martha and had a nice chat with them. They live down near Charlotte and visit occasionally and have really fixed up the place. They had two of their grandchildren up with them for the week who are Sam and Gabe ages. Hopefully some day they will be friends as well.

I started working on taking down tomato cages, bean poles and fences in the garden and getting it ready to till when suddenly clouds moved in and a light rain fell for about a half hour. The sun came back out and the skies cleared and the temps dropped precipitously with the wind, yeow what a difference in such a short time. We were having supper and a game night with the Dalton's and Luffman's and the pot of spaghetti sauce smelled delicious. Along with a fresh garden salad and crusty bread we feasted and then Kay had made homemade apple pies which were out of this world in taste. We taught them Euchre and then decided to have at least the best of 5 games in Sequence where we hoop and holler and aggravate each other on who is cheating the most during the game. Well I must say the guys finally whupped the gals in the fifth and deciding game as it was a squeaker right down to the end. That has been a rare occurrence with us winning the past few years.

After they headed out it was wash the dishes and then a hot shower and finally some horizontal lab with a Sandra Brown book until 11'ish, LATER
