Well Tuesday saw us with one of the fiercest thunderstorms of the summer. One in which we are accustomed to seeing in Florida. The lightning sizzled in the air, thunder boomed all around us and a down pour with a little hail and rain that measured nearly and inch and a half in just about 45 minutes or less. Our drive way washed large ruts and the gardens were holding standing water for quite awhile. Wow what a cloud burst.
We started the day with bright sunshine and clear skies and temps a little on the warm side compared to last week when it all of a sudden felt like Fall had arrived. What a big change this week as we saw the low 80's for the first time in several days. I could see large thunderheads building over the mountains and had a feeling we were in for a gully washer and boy did it ever deliver in the early afternoon. We slept in until nearly 7:30 and some of us in until after 8, oh well we were recovering for all the activity the past several days. After a few quiet moments and the posting of this ramble I had a piece of coffee cake for breakfast and then headed down to do some laundry. We got two loads on the line and they dried before the big storm hit as the sun was very hot. It finally felt like a summer day but pleasant in the shade with the gentle breeze. We took off for the top of the mountain on our daily hike and encountered no one on top.
I weeded the upper gardens and fertilized before picking a nice mess of lettuce, spinach, cabbage, kale and beet greens for a large salad that Nancy put together. The small teardrop tomato's are ripening and I'm finding a half dozen daily really for picking. They are great on salads and now are plentiful. I'm even giving a few away as I'm still eating some Shenandoah Valley tomato's Dee brought from her garden. There is nothing like fresh tomato and onion sandwich slathered with mayo for lunch or when ever.
We ate leftovers for lunch from the Labor Day picnic and just a fresh salad for supper. After the cleanup we headed out on the golf cart to visit our "mountain mom" Helen. The air was so fresh and clean and just a slight touch of chill as evening fell. We sat out on her porch and talked until nearly dusk before heading back to the cabin. It was after 8 PM before we headed in for the night and when it did it was a dark night as the clouds once more descended upon us. It actually rained again before we headed for the showers and some horizontal lab with our respective reads around 10:30.
We are off today(Wed.) for Winston to visit with Eddie at Baptist Hospital and do some birthday shopping for the kiddos birthdays coming up in the next few weeks, LATER
