Friday was one of those days that started around 7 AM with a wake up that found us wondering when it was going to down pour. It was overcast with rain clouds through out the day with an occasionally spike of sunshine, The humidity was gone which made for great conditions for working out in the yards digging up moss. After a few moments to reflect, give thanks and lift up those who we know and love with special needs I started the morning with the last of the watermelon for breakfast after my cup of tea. That was the best melon I've had in quite sometime and it came from Wal-Mart in Galax.
After breakfast I headed out with my gum boots on as the grass was soaked with dew and rain from the night before and the grass has now reached a stage where mowing is a concern due to the soggy wet ground of the past 10 days or so of rain in the amount of a foot and a half. I still have a small stream running down the back yard gully and the sound of it is soothing to one's ear. I spent the next couple hours hitting some major areas of moss in the backwoods yard until Nancy thought it best to get our hike in while it wasn't raining. The skies and conditions reminded me of what the residents of Seattle go through year round as the only times I've ever been to that city it's been wet and overcast.
We took off to the top of the mountain and scared up a large deer on the way up. We saw Sonja and Gordon Frampton as they were about to venture out for their morning walk as well. We hiked together and they became interested in my wine berry crop so they headed down the back trail with us and we showed them our berry bushes and our flower gardens. We sat on the front porch in the rockers and shared stories and we learned some very interesting things about their lives. We are now friends on Face Book as well. It was nearly 1 o'clock when they decided it was time to head back up our steep trail through the woods. Nancy and I had a salad and some great Rosemary bread purchased at a local bakery shop in Sparta. After lunch I headed back to the yards to work on the moss problem in different parts of the yard. I want to mow the main yard before digging moss from problem areas there.
We took off around 4 PM for the mailbox on the golf cart and scared up 2 large wild turkeys and a chick. That chick flew over the road like a bird whereas the 2 large birds did mixture of both hopping, running and flying. It wasn't long after our trip the skies opened up once again and the rain fell. I had scheduled a pickle ball match at 6:30 and it was still raining around 6 but the weather radar showed our areas was going to be free of showers for awhile. I contacted the 4 other players and we headed to the court. The surface of the court is non-skid so we didn't have to be concerned about the wet court as it was made of aluminum.
I picked up neighbor Gerald and we headed out and met up at the country club for some 2 plus hours of continuous play that lasted until nearly 9 PM. We had no rain but the fog starting drifting in the last couple of sets. A great time was had by all and we made a date for Monday evening to play again. Gerald and I saw another deer on the way back to the cabin. I watched the last couple innings of the Ray's on the Internet and they lost 2-1 after winning 8 straight games and nearly came from behind in this game.
Well the hot shower felt good as the old muscles were starting to stiffen after playing in the fog and with the temps down into the 60's; plus I had put in a good day of work in the yards. I almost forgot to mention we heard the heartbeat of our newest grandchild who is expected to arrive sometime the first of January. It's amazing how much technology has progressed during my lifetime. Nancy speaks with her mom, GG and our daughter, Amy nearly everyday and we both spoke with Ava and Sam yesterday. We have Skype but forget about using that as well, amazing to see and speak in real time. Well I've rambled on long enough. It's foggy out this Saturday morning but at least no rain. The stillness is really kind of nice for change with no rain beating down on the tin roof, LATER
Here are a few pics of what's left of the gardens, the wine berry bushes and berries which resemble a red raspberry and some of Nancy's beautiful flowers.
