Well Thursday started out with my usual 6'ish roll out to temps in the low 30's and it must have rained over night which was such a relief to this drought stricken area. I meant it is really dry here. This area is use to several feet of snow yearly and there has been virtually none the past couple years anyhow it was down right chilly in the cabin so we turned on the electric heaters that are in every room. It didn't take it long for it to get comfortable and the outside showed signs of being a nice day with plenty of sunshine.
We decided after making our own breakfast's of muffins, toast and oatmeal that the gals would do their thing and we guys would do ours. It was after 11 before we all left the cabin and it would be around 4:30 before we got back only to find the gals were still out shopping. We found a smoky barbecue house just outside of town and loaded up on brisket and smoked sausages and chili sandwiches before heading north into the high Sierras Mountains near Sierraville where there was a hiking trail back to a place called Frazier Falls. Well let me say the vistas were incredibly beautiful with deep gorges in the mountains and flat valley's in between the mountains that were huge and just loaded with cattle, horses and llamas. These flat areas were miles long reaching right up to where the trees started up the mountains. The beautiful evergreens were huge and as we climbed higher I'm sure we saw what appeared to be juvenile red woods.
We found the falls area only to discover the trail back to the falls was under construction with renovation and it was closed to the public. The ranger allowed to wonder around the area that was enclosed in huge rock formations that required some rock climbing with views that were awesome and very rugged with sheer drop offs into the gorges below. She said there was very little water at the falls and that despite the trail back to it you couldn't actually get next to the falling water only look at it from a distance. So we didn't think we missed much after all. Wow what a rugged place. We did have 4 mule deer cross the road in front of us and we wondered how did they ever get up those steep slopes from down below the gorge. They didn't stick around long enough for a picture. They must have been down below for a drink from the small stream of water.
We decided since it was going on 3'ish to head back towards Truckee. On the way we noticed this small area where several building indicated a lodge was present so we stopped for some refreshments and found the lodge manager just opening up for the day. This was a huge place with a restaurant, rooms for rent, a huge dance floor and well stocked liquor bar. The young gal Nicole the manager and was very nice and pleasant to chat with and we learned she and her husband moved from the city of Oakland last year to run this place. They serve food and have live music on the weekends and its seems this is the place for entertainment for miles around. The building was over a hundred years old with huge fireplaces and lots of animals heads and skins hanging from the walls. We really liked this rustic place and stayed and chatted for a spell taking a few pictures.(I enclosed several of the place and area)
Dan had left his sunglasses at the barbecue house so we stopped on the way back and they still had them for him. That added kudos to the folks who run the place as well as to their quality of food. Well we chilled upon arriving back from the mountains. The sun had warmed up the area to the middle 50's and was quite pleasant; however the temps began to drop quickly once more as night fell. We spoke with Bobby and sang Happy Birthday to Gabe as he will be 5 years old tomorrow(today). Bobby had the kiddos on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Well we decided to eat the leftovers we had accumulated over the past couple days. I tried a bit of a leftover burger and it was so dry that a small portion became stuck in my windpipe so Dan gave me a squeeze around the tummy from the rear and it became dislodged and I went right back to eating. Thanks Dan!!! Needless to say everyone else was concerned, thanks to that as well.
Well we settled into the NFL game which came on here in California at 5:30 PM. That takes some getting use to. When we spoke to the kiddos we told them it was 5:30 here and still light outside and Annsley said you can stay up and watch more T.V. She was fascinated the sun was still shining and it being dark at Bobby's. Well the football game was a real barn burner with the Broncos and the old man Manning bringing them back from behind to a victory in the end. What a game that was. It was shower time for me after the game even though it was 9'ish which to me felt like the midnight hour it was so I headed off for some horizontal lab, LATER
