Well the rain has once again moved back into the mountains after what started out as a beautiful morning. We headed out with neighbor Gerald to the "great pumpkin patch" after picking up Kaitlyn at her house as she has dibs on all the pumpkins laying in the fields waiting for the great tractors to come along and smash them into the ground. We saw literally thousands upon thousands of the orange balls scattered about in several fields throughout the county. We loaded up the back of Gerald's pickup truck with probably 50 or more to be taken to the Raleigh area as well as the Blacksburg area and of course Nancy has them placed all around our cabin.
That project kept us busy until mid-morning. I took the weed whacker and mowed off all of the dead flower stalks so we could place the orange balls everywhere. The flower beds were starting to look rather ragged with stems and stalks of the now dead flowers sticking up throughout the beds and the leveling off helped with the looks of what the cold weather has done to the flowers with the approach of winter. Nancy placed the pumpkins while I weed whacked and then afterwards we had a lite lunch of a salad before heading out for our daily hike to the top of the mountain.
We stopped and talked with our deceased friend Helen's family at her cabin. They spread her ashes this morning as per her request around her cabin and then today(Sat.) there will be a memorial service at the little church she attended out at Roaring Gap. We sat and talked with her children and learned she raised her kids in the Brandon area outside of Tampa for many years. Her one son had on a Bucs shirt as he is still a fan. It was a good visit and they were most gracious as they reminisced about their mother. We shared how we would look forward to seeing her on our daily hikes during the summer months, our hello's and hugs as well as returning her one cat, Teddy to her door as he would follow us across the mountain.
We headed back down the mountain and piddled around outside as the temps had warmed up to the middle 60's. I finished cleaning up the lower garden, putting away the wire fences, tomato cages and posts as well as gathered a couple trash cans of leaves to be worked into the soil. It began to drizzle and shortly it down poured so my outside work was finished for the day. I picked up the Sandra Brown book RAINWATER and finished it. This is another great read about the depression days and how goodness can prevail despite the times and circumstances surrounding the heart. We sat and read for over an hour until it was time to grill a couple brauts
. Nancy sautéed some peppers and yellow squash and we stayed away from any starches. We both need to eat lite and healthy this week before all of our family come for a week of gastric delights.
I settled into the Fox news on the tube until the ALDS game started between the Royals and Orioles. Normally I would pull for the birds but since our son-in-law is from Kansas we are pulling for them and they let a 5-1 lead get away from them with James Shields, a former Ray's pitcher on the mound, yikes. I read this morning where they came back and won in extra innings. I could not stay awake after that hot shower around 11, LATER Here are a few pumpkin pics!!
