Well August came in with some much needed rain during the night and the gardens and yards are looking perkier already this morning. July was a very dry month for us here in the mountains and this rain will bring on the veggies I hope.
I started Thursday much the usual with a now 7'ish rollout to temps once again in the 50's which is some what nice because of the lack of rainfall. It was cloudy for most of the day and we saw brief glimpses of the sun through out the afternoon. It was "go to town day" so after our usual routine(s) we headed out around 10'ish. After a trash stop, we headed to the big town of Galax, Va. where we made a bank stop, then a haircut for me. I had mentioned the last time at was at the barbershop about our friend Eddie who suffered that terrible accident well little did I know this is the same shop where he has been getting his haircut for years. Harold the owner of the shop question me about the accident and he was surprised to learn of the misfortune that happened to Eddie. I filled him in on all that had happened and where Eddie was so Harold went down to Baptist Hospital and cut Eddies hair for him. There aren't many barbers who would do that.
We headed out after the ear lowering and filled up the truck and a can with gas at 3.25 a gallon for the mower and golf cart as well before heading to Wal-Mart for some shopping. We made a quick stop at Horton's for some fresh fruit before filling up on propane as well for the grill on the way out of town. We were back home by 1:30 and the temp's were still in the 60's. After a late lunch of salad we took off on our daily hike to the top. We stopped and visited with the Browning's who blessed us with a couple cukes before heading back down the mountain. They attended the funeral in High Point for Barry Moore who had a cabin on top of the mountain for as long as we have been coming up here. He had been in very poor health for years and we haven't seen him or his wife Bertie at the cabin in many moons.
We got chilled setting on the Browning's porch so decided to stay in the cabin and read until supper time with our long sleeve shirts and pants on. We got so engrossed in our materials that it was nearly six before we started supper. I grilled a fresh zucchini from my garden(the first and only one so far) with some olive oil and spices along with a couple sirloin steaks and Nancy made my favorite fried taters and onions. Wow what a feast and I doctored the steaks with some fresh thyme and rosemary. Yikes was that some fine eatin'. After the cleanup we headed outside to walk around the cabin then decided it was too damp and chilly so we vegetated in front of the T.V. catching up on the FOX NEWS Channel until it was time for a hot shower and then some horizontal lab with a Sandra Brown's book, LATER
