Wednesday Morning

Well Tuesday was a work day for me. I was in the backwoods yard for about 5 hours raking and hauling several loads of moss that was starting to taken over choking out the grass. nancy was some where in the cabin but mostly on the phone with family and friends in Florida. We did get in a hike and a golf cart ride to our "mountain mom" Helens place after supper. I had put on a new mirror on her golf cart and while driving it the mirror loosen and fell down. I only hand tighten it not thinking it would jar loose from the vibrations of the roof top. Needless to say I used extra long bolts and wrenches to tighten it down and then a couple nylon straps to secure it in the middle to the roof as well. We took a test ride down to the bridge being built on Shawtown Road and it worked fine and stayed in place.

I started the day with my usual 6'ish roll out and then my cup of hot turmeric tea, the posting of this ramble and them my quiet time before having a breakfast of boring oatmeal with cinnamon and honey. It was somewhat overcast with high clouds which kept the heat down and a perfect day for physical work so I loaded up the golf cart with rakes and a pitchfork and went to work in the backwoods yard. I was surprised at how much grass was evident after loosening and removing the moss. I then loaded up the spreader with pelletized lime and fertilizer and gave the cleared 15 x 40 foot area or so a good feeding. Hopefully this will help with giving the grass a good start before the moss invades again. The shaded area is great for growing moss but slowly I'm getting a stand of grass especially after all of the trees I've removed over the years.

We took a good hike to the top and waved at Gordon and Sonja as they had company arriving the time we walked by. The Browning's were gone so our hike was less than an hour for a change. We had a lite lunch of cheese, cucumber and an apple for me. We even cleaned up the last of the leftover ribs, casserole, green beans and pasta from a few days ago.  Today (Wed) we head over to Elk Creek, Va. for a pulled supper with the Tracy's and the Carlan's at their beautiful log cabin, which by the way it's for sale. It's the oldest original log cabin in the county and on the historical registry and it's gorgeous on several acres. They are moving back to Tennessee to be near their son.

We had a great trip over to Helen's on the golf cart then Nancy drove her electric cart down the closed road for a couple miles as we wanted to see the bridge being built at the foot of the hill on Shawtown Road. The electric cart did great especially down hill but was lacking some power compared to my gas cart on the up hill drive. It was a beautiful evening after we got a nice rain in the afternoon with a couple of tenth's of rain. We sure needed that and then overnight it rained several times awaking me with the rain on the tin roof.

Well an old USAF buddy called me and gave me some sad news that one of our pals and fellow loadmasters, Johnny"Newt" Smelcher succumbed to leukemia over night. We were flying buddies for 4 years and we kept in touch over the years. We were all exposed to the Agent Orange as we carried it to Viet Nam on our aircraft as well as being exposed to it on the ground. We have lost several of our flying buddies over the years and this nasty defoliate substance may have been a culprit into their early deaths.  RIP Newt you were a great pal as well as a family man, LATER

Here are a few pics Nancy took yesterday!!!
