Well needless to say I'm in my glory with everything that needs to be done to get this place in showcase form; I love the hard physical work which is taking the place of pickle ball. I must say yesterday was a full day and it started with me rolling out a little after 5 in the morning. We had no internet or tv so instead of posting this blog after my morning cup of hot green tea laced with turmeric I headed out to the gardens especially the patch just out near the backwoods yard. I was able my hand a hoe remove the grasses and weeds and put in the ground the some of the seedlings I brought with me from Florida.
The seedlings traveled fairly well but I did notice the jalapeno pepper plant was quite droopy but I put it in the ground with a little epsom salt and it did perk up over night and the rosemary looked as if it was still in the soil in Florida. I start my rosemary from a cutting so I always have plenty of it on hand. I did notice that some dill from last years was up in the patch as well as the oregano was beautiful. It never seems to die and love its spot in the patch. I set out several hills of collards, kale, Swiss chard and beets. The curly leaf kale was so small it didn't make it on the trip. I did transplant the two tomato volunteers from my compost pile in hopes they are a delicious as the ones we brought with us from the Florida garden.
The ground still had a lot of moisture and it was difficult shaking off the soil that clung to the weed roots and I noticed while rotor tilling a couple of the flower beds still held moisture. All of the rain the last couple of weeks have lots of greenery in the area with many blooming flowers as well as the mountain laurel which looks a lot like apple blossoms. I have the wild mountain laurel in full orange bloom as well which is in the backwoods yard area. Speaking of the backwoods yard well it has taken on a new total look with 10 trees cut this winter. The amount of new sunlight will hopefully help with getting rid of the moss which keeps the grass from growing in that area. I just now need to get rid of the stumps which I'll do later with a grinder. I learned my lesson about digging them which I did one summer but ruined a few muscles in the process. A stump grinder should do the trick.
It was a full day and Nancy made me quit after supper and rest so we took a golf cart ride to the top of the mountains and visited for a few with Roddy and Kathy who were up for just a couple days. We had a great visit with them and then headed home We saw where a few folks were up at their cabins but none were outside as we rode across the top. It was great to see the long distant views once again. The air was quickly dropping the temps so we headed home. It was in the low 50's on the back porch this morning with some 40's in the area. The sunshine and blue skies were magnificent and the fresh air was so sweet with the smell of the fresh mowed grasses. Everything around us was GOD made and we just love it. The birds were happy but I do have one nesting bird who has a nest above the window upstairs. They are dirty but there are either eggs or little ones in it so I'll wait to tear it down later this summer.
That was about it as Nancy was inside the cabin doing her thing and me outside with the weed whacker, rotor tiller and the mowing tractor. I got the whole place mowed at least once and a couple areas twice. It will take a week or so for it to grow back to normal. I did rake up some of the many grass heads and spread them in some of the bare areas in the backwoods yard. Hopefully by next year that area will look more like a yard. We still have several days work ahead of us as we grow the best grass ever in our flower beds. I think next year no more horse manure in the beds which I think that where the grass comes from. I just spread it in the yards; duh why didn't I think of that before, oh well. LATER
