Well Tuesday was one of those days that we saw lots of rain, clouds and at times a peek by the sun in the afternoon and evening and then once again during the night it rained so hard it sounded as if hail was striking the tin roof. The temps did warm up to the middle 60's so it wasn't totally depressing however we were unable to get in our hike or any physical exercise except for bending the elbow at lunch with some old dear friends in Sparta at the Pines Eatery.
I started the day with a roll out around 6:30'ish after a decent nights sleep as I'm acclimating to quietness and the closeness of having to sleep in a queen size bed as opposed to the vastness associated with the king bed. I remember the days when we visited family and slept on a regular size bed that allowed for no movement as I'm a "toss and turner," oh well such is life. It does take some getting use to as our beds are so different from each other as is the mountains so different from Florida living.
After our quiet times and a lite breakfast of boring oatmeal doctored up with some cinnamon and honey we decided to set up the schedule for entertaining for the week. We called Sam and Marcia over in Deer Creek, Va. and learned they were on the way to Tennessee with Marcia's mother and Betsy(pooch) for a visit with their son and his wife. We lost connection a couple times but decided we would do something with them after they get back next week or after church on Sunday.
We had already set up a date for the Dalton Gang for supper and games on Thursday night at our place and then on Friday we are taking our "mountain mom" Helen and her brother Joe for supper to Buckaroo's. Patrick and Kathryn ate there this summer and said the food was very good. It's a little out of the way so we will explore some mountain roads on the way to and from. On Saturday we will have neighbor Gerald and his new friend for supper and to teach them the new game we learned this summer called Euchre. Sunday is taken up with church and lunch out afterwards. So it seems we will get in lots of elbow exercise at the table but we need to get back on the hiking path. Tonight(Wed) I will be back on the pickle ball court with Gerald and the gang from church and then on Friday Gerald and I will accompany Kaitlyn for some pumpkin patch pickings to spruce up our drives for the Fall look.
I gave our old dear friends and the feller who wired and plumbed our cabin and who we became good friends with over the years when Bobby and Amy were just youngsters a call. We usually try to get together with him and his wife Theia a couple times a year for supper but the past several years we've all been just to caught up with other activities. Well we met them at the Pines eatery for a delicious buffet lunch. I had two pieces of fried chicken (which we never eat) that were so good as well as lots of smashed taters and gravy, pinto beans, stewed apples, Salisbury steak and corn bread. Needless to say I skipped supper after that fine meal, anyhow we caught up on old times. His oldest grandson is now 14 and we were amazed at where the time went over these past years. His son Dale wasn't even married when we first met them and now has the 3 sons. Walt is showing very distressed signs of his health ailments and we were just brokenhearted to see him in this conditions. He can barely get around and has such swelling in his torso and face. After eating we drove back to their home and visited another couple hours and they showered us with bounty from their garden; a watermelon, some green beans and peppers as well as some dried up corn stocks we will use to decorate for the Fall motif. It was a great visit, except for seeing him with such dire health concerns and I'm disappointed I hadn't taken the time to seen them in a couple years.
We ran some errands in town after a stop at the library for some new reads and an old read I never got to finish before going back to Florida. The book TO DANCE WITH THE WHITE DOG by Terry Kay, a local author is a great read. I must warn you it's "slobber knocker" and you will be surprised at the ending especially when you read about the author at the end of the book. That's all I will say but read it and you will be intrigued. We made a stop at the local meat market to load up once again for our family(Nancy's side) that will be here for a week next week and then a week after that our son Bobby and his kiddos will be here for a whirlwind weekend as they fly in from Tampa the first weekend in November.
Well we spent the evening reading and I skipped supper except for a bowl of popcorn, popped the old fashion way as I watched the Cardinals eliminate the Dodgers in the playoffs against what was supposed to be the best pitcher in baseball. I learned the Nationals were eliminated out in 'Frisco by the Giants in the late game but the sandman calleth about 10:30 and since we have the one T.V. here at the cabin Nancy was into her favorite show next to RFD T.V. which is Dance Moms. I totally don't see the attraction to this show but at one time Nancy took dance in her younger years.
I think we are home for the day except maybe a couple chores over at our 'Mountain moms" if it clears off. I noticed one of the tires on my riding mower is losing air so I will have to pump it up before mowing. Hopefully it's just from the cold weather, LATER
