Well Sunday was a total wash out with heavy down pours through out the day and night and on top of that with really no wind to speak of we lost power twice during the evening hours. I can't imagine the tree damage if we had any winds at all because the ground is saturated and the trees are so susceptible to falling. We know of at least two somewhere that took out a power line and of course several were down throughout the county. I must say with the number of folks without power for a couple of hours was nothing compared to what the east coast suffered for hours.
I have no idea how much rain we got but it was more than I've ever seen at one time as this slow mover storm dropped tons here in the mountains. We don't have to worry about being flooded because we are near the top but the water run off maybe a serious problem come morning when I check the road and driveway. We have a couple cabins in our road right on a small creek and several driveways must cross small trickles of water that drain the whole top of the mountain which quickly turns into roaring rivers. It's still raining ever so lightly and its very dark yet. As soon as it gets light enough I'll take the golf cart and check on neighbors and the road; thankfully neighbor Gerald gave me the use of his tractor if I need it to scrape the road and to remove any down trees if need me. Hopefully all is well except for a few ruts which can easily be scraped and smoothed out with the box blade on the tractor.
We did great for the first part of the day until the storm started dropping heavy rain which lasted for hours. We did have a few wind gusts which didn't last long and nothing fell as far as we could tell around the cabin but around 7:30 the lights went out for the first time. Luckily we had eaten and Nancy had just showered when things went dark. There was just enough light to see around the cabin to gather up candles and some flash lights and a LED lantern. We sat and read for the next two hours using these means of seeing. We had the cell phone and called in the outage and they said we should have power by 11. It was just after 9:30 when the lights came on which was great. I jumped in the shower and then watched some of the weather channel which was still focused on the east coast which their flooding and heavy rains. This storm was so large and such a slow moving one. We did get a local channel in Charlotte which put the storm right over our county as it slowly headed north into Va. and towards W.Va. dropping unbelievable amounts of water.
I headed in for some horizontal lab after resetting all of the clocks around 10'ish and then Nancy came to bed sometime later saying the power was out once again. Around 3'ish I awakened and noticed several lights were on in the cabin and the power has been on since. The rain is still falling albeit ever so lightly as we hear if on the tin roof. I think remnants of the storm is still here unfortunately and its supposed to influence the weather today. It's back to raining hard once again as I write so it may be a while before I can get out to check on the neighbors and the road conditions but at least we have power and ever thing else we need to function for a couple of more days, LATER
