Well Wednesday was one of those days you long for when the temps are hot, muggy and there has been no rain for weeks. It rained during the night and again as day broke with heavy fog. We never saw the sun at all during the day despite leaving our side of the mountain and heading over to Elk Creek Mountain north of Independence, Va. The rain did cease for awhile mid morning and some in the afternoon but the fog was present all day and last night coming home around 10'ish we could barely make out the painted yellow center on the highway. Once again during the night it rained off and on with down pours and the fog is back with us once again today(Thur). There is a saying here in the mountains that for every fog day in August there will be a snow day during the winter. This front that has stalled over the mountains could mean a snowy winter this year.
The morning was a little different as the rain on the tin roof kept me in the sack until nearly 7:30 besides it was took wet to plan anything outside to do. After my cup of hot turmeric drink, the posting of this ramble I did my morning quiet time to honor my Creator and lift up those I know in prayer. It was after 9 o'clock before we decided to eat breakfast. Nancy made blueberry pancakes with a couple of cackleberries(eggs) on top which held us until late evening when we ate with our friends in Virginia. We read for most of the day and in between rain showers I did manage to piddle around in the yard and garden harvesting cucumbers, jalapeno' peppers and some green beans that I picked along the edges of the patch. I didn't want to get in the rows as it was just to wet and this clay soil packs like concrete when it gets wet.
We took off a little after 3'ish for Sparta as we wanted to stop at the library for some new reads and return some. We were meeting up with the Tracy's at one of the local parking lots so we could carpool over to the Carlan's. It was my turn to drive. We got there sometime close to 5'ish and the rain had ceased, yet the fog was present on the mountain tops which made for a picturesque view. We visited their old but well made barn, gave treats to the horse and donkey they keep on the property and took a group photo.
We headed in to snack on some great appetizers of guacamole and cheese dip that Kathryn made as it was a South of the Border theme for the main courses. Marcia had Spanish rice and a taco meat with veggies to go over a bed of lettuces. I of course cut up a couple fresh jalapeno's from the garden to wake up the taste buds and Nancy made a delicious Granny Smith apple pie for dessert. We even added some ice cream to the top. Wow, did we ever eat well.
After the clean up we settled into 5 rounds of Phase 10 when we decided to switch games and played Balderdash until 9:30. That was a hoot and Nancy and I were tied as the biggest liars of the group or the luckiest, anyhow with an hour drive or more and the fog setting again we thought it best to head out for home. Luckily we met no deer on the highway as at times the fog was very thick and visibility was just feet. We made in back in the rain and fog and soon were in the hot shower and curled up with a book until 11'ish with the sound of rain on the tin roof, LATER
By the way this place is on the market with 7 acres and this old historical house if anyone is interested!!! Beautiful setting in Elk Creek,Virginia. We are saddened to know they are leaving the area to be closer to family in Tennessee.
