Well Sunday started out with bitter cold temps into the low 20's, the wind was blowing tropical storm strength which added to the wind chill. The doors to the truck were frozen shut when we got ready to leave out for church. Most of the major snow is gone off of the roads with only a little showing in the areas where the sun doesn't shine. We headed out for our last visit this year at Cornerstone Church with a bowl of tater salad and chocolate cup cakes to add to the bounty for this years homecoming luncheon.
We had a good crowd of folks despite several families being under the weather. We helped in the kitchen before the service getting dishes ready for the serving line. After the service we served about 150 people or more various homemade dishes. I must say the biggest assortment of dishes were in the dessert department as these mountain folks love their desserts. After eating we stayed and I washed dishes and the serving utensils until nearly 2 o'clock. It was much easier saying good bye to all of those kitchen workers as we were away from the main congregation.
We made a stop at Dollar General and Food Lion before heading back to the cabin. The propane heater had the cabin warm and toasty. We decided since it had warmed up to a balmy 40 degrees to get in a hike to the top of the mountain. We were bundled up in sweaters, coats, hats and gloves for the trek to the top. The air was still quite brisk in the shaded areas and thankfully the wind had died down to just a gentle breeze. We stopped and visit with Joe and Jetta. Joe had a hot fire in his stove which really puts out some heat. We had to take off our coats and hats as we quickly were warmed so much I began to get sleepy. Once we were back outside we awakened rapidly from the cold air. We made the climb up and past the towers on our way back to the cabin and saw were Shawnee was at her cabin. Other than her car the top of the mountain was cold and desolate as we headed back down through the woods.
We stopped by and spoke with neighbor Gerald on out way back to the cabin. He had been visiting with his son, Gabriel in the Raleigh area over the weekend and missed the big snow event. We made plans together to install a gate at our driveways in the next couple days so we can eliminate traffic while we are gone. I got interested in the NFL games and Nancy did her social media on Facebook. We ate a garden salad with the left over tater salad and some Greek dressing for supper. Today(Mon) the forecast is for some warming and sunny skies. I have a few small trees to cut for our "mountain mom" and her brother Joe before we head back for the winter. We are getting excited about son Bobby and his two little ones Annsley and Gabriel who will fly in for the weekend, LATER
