Well the morning started out with a 7 AM wake up; the dew dripping from the upstairs dormer on to the tin roof and the birds singing where the only sounds present. There is such stillness surrounding our cabin nestled back in the woods. It was somewhat overcast until mid morning when the blue skies and bright sunshine made an appearance and prevailed the rest of the day. At times it got downright hot in the direct sunlight but for the most part; the warmest it got was close to 80. The humidity is present but only around 50 % according to the weatherman; but while working in the backwoods yard raking up piles of moss my shirt was soaked.
After my quiet moments and the last of the buckwheat cakes I headed out to check on the gardens and flower beds. The ground is still soaked enough that my boots were muddy. I managed to pick off several slugs and beetles sending them to their final destination under my boot. The beetles are really eating the wine berry leaves and some of Nancy's Shasta daisies. I dusted the vegetables(what's left) in the lower garden but did notice a couple cucumbers about 3-4 inches long. The 1/2 runners are climbing my chicken wire screen and the spuds are still blooming. The sweet 'taters are spreading their vines and cabbage is still hanging in their but barely due to all the rain.
Around 11 or so we took off on our daily hike up the steep back trail; one of us can now make it to the top without a rest. We saw Joe and Jetta on top of the mountain and stopped briefly for a chat before heading back down for some lunch. After a smoked chicken sandwich I headed back to the moss problem in the backwoods yard; at least I was in the shade so working conditions were nice. Nancy had laundry on the line and was working her camera skills on taking some bug pictures on her flowers.
We took off on a golf cart ride to the mailbox and stopped to visit with Grant and Shirley. They had an elderly lady visiting from their church and wanted to see the top of the mountain but they lost the key to their golf cart so I took Ms. Nina on a long trip to the top. She was so thrilled to be able to see the beautiful views that we see each day. We had a fun pleasant ride especially when I mentioned a black bear was prowling where we were riding. She so wanted to see it.
Well after taking her back down off the mountain we headed home for some chicken fried deer steak, rice and gravy for supper. My oh my is that not ever the best tasting meat. Well after the clean up I headed out to burn trash as we accumulated several bags while our company was here last week. I burned
