Well Thursday saw us sleeping in until around 7:30 after staying up to watch the ball drop in Times Square the night before. Really I don't know why we watch that act of beginning the new year as its rather silly and everyone putting off loud fireworks seems such a waste as well, oh well!! We spent the morning after a few moments of giving thanks and reflecting on our family and friends in our daily devotions. We then soft boiled a couple cackleberries(eggs) to start the gastric juices flowing in a warm up for the big evening meal on this special day. We had a pork roast(bone-in) thawing and waiting for the oven in the afternoon but first we had a couple smoked ham hocks in a pot boiling to flavor a pot of black-eyed peas which is somewhat a southern traditional dish on this day. This awesome smell permeated throughout the house most of the day and had us salivating as we awaited supper.
I headed out around 10'ish into the gardens to feed the plants and give it a good watering after harvesting 3 kinds of lettuces, kale, beet greens, spinach and some radishes for a garden salad. Nancy added some peppers, carrots and cabbage that were store bought to the salad as well. Afterwards I had a bowl of the layered taco dip for lunch around 12:30 before settling in with a new read for the afternoon. I must say it was a quiet afternoon around here and conducive to some great reading. I wanted to watch some football bowl game but decided to tune into only the two games at 5 and then again at 9. Both of those games surprised me with the out comes as Oregon has a super team and a great QB who will probably be drafted by the BUCS. They definitely need a young talented QB and he seems to fit the bill. I was surprised at how badly the FSU team played but maybe that was because the Oregon was so good. They destroyed the boys from Tallahassee in a blow out win. I was also surprised of the out come in the 'Bama game as the boys from Ohio State took it to the Crimson Tide in at least a closer in score game. These two teams will play next week for the championship and the bragging rights of who is number one.
We had our traditional New Years Meal with the blackeyes pea soup to start with, roast pork with sauerkraut, kielbasa, Nathan dogs and smashed spuds. Amy brought what looked like a lemon pie from some market place. I once again decided to stick to my plans of reducing the spare tire by limiting my intake, so I passed on the spuds, bread and pie. They all looked so delicious and tempting but I remained vigil in my decision to refrain from these delectable's, beside the pork, peas and kraut were very fillings.
After the cleanup Tyler gave little Eliza Faye a bath and then we all sat around and watched the football game. They headed out around 9'ish for home as little Eliza had developed a deep cough which left her very cranky. She seemed fine during the afternoon but after supper this cough came on very strong. She wasn't a happy camper with being here the last hour or so as she needed her own bed and it was pass her bedtime. After they left we put the house back in order then I retired to the TV in the bedroom and watched the late game until half time which was very close. I did some horizontal lab shortly thereafter and learned the boys from Alabama were the losers after being number one in the country for some time, LATER
