A Cold Sunday Morning in the Mountains

Yeow is all I can say about Saturday. We awakened to the ground covered with the frozen white stuff and at one time I measured it at 5 1/4 inches and it continued to fall for another hour or so. It was so still at first light then we began to see some wind which by late evening had cleaned the trees of their snow ornaments. The trees, bushes and what leaves were hanging on the trees were just beautiful with the wet sticky snow. Wow it truly was a winter wonderland.

Nancy was so excited to see the snow that she ran around from window to window admiring the beauty of the whiteness and then she donned boots and coats and out the door she went. I've never seen her so excited about snow but that all changed when we decided to go for a golf cart ride. I took an old antique sled "flexible flyer" and loaded it in the back of the golf cart along with a rope and off we went. First we headed out to see if any mail came and the hard road as well as most of our gravel road was melting. The ground was just to warm to hold the snow on the roads. We headed up to visit the Hudson's and bring them some greetings. They had a nice fire in their fireplace and we visited for about a 1/2 hour before heading on to the top of our mountain.

Well the conditions suddenly changed as a strong steady wind suddenly began to blow and the trees were quickly giving up white plumes of snow as we traveled up the back road. By the time we got to the top of the mountain we were shivering and the gold cart windshield and top was covered in snow. We stopped briefly and chatted up Joe and Jetta and learned they were without power for a couple hours. Our lights flickered for just a few seconds and came back on causing us to lose Internet connections for a short time until I reset everything with Tyler's help.

We stopped and took pictures of the cabins of those we knew who had e-mails and sent them a picture. Brr is was down right nasty as we headed down off the mountain on the back trails. There were lots of bent over limbs still holding the wet snow as we plowed down the mountain covering us with the cold wet stuff. The golf cart was like a mountain goat and we traveled easily through the 5 plus inches of snow. We decided since we were so cold and covered with snow we would forego the sled ride and get warm. The cabin was toasty and we didn't venture out much for the rest of the day.

The wind really began to howl as we could hear it inside the cabin from those cell phone towers on top of the mountain and that was evident throughout the night as well. Yikes it was a wind chill down into the teens despite it warming up to a balmy 38 for the high. The snow began melt and was blown off of the truck and the roof of the cabin throughout the evening. I did venture out just before dark and finish cleaning the truck of snow as well as the porches and deck as it was calling for a hard freeze. We settled into some hot soup for lunch and a salad for supper. I maintained a look at some college football and watched some good games while Nancy did her FB and Internet entertainment. She got the TV starting at 5 as the Breeders Cup horse racing was being televised from California.

After a hot shower and some Julie Garwood who writes much like Sandra Brown I turned in for the night listening to the wind howl outside. The propane heater gave us a scare as it suddenly cut off and after getting it started once again I burned it on high for several minutes which seemed to correct the problem. It burned all night long and kept the cabin toasty at 70 this morning. Well today is homecoming and our last Sunday at Cornerstone Church this year. Nancy made a potato salad and chocolate cupcakes to share at the luncheon. We will say our good-byes with hugs and tears, LATER Here are a few pics from the several Nancy took yesterday.
