Well Thursday turned out to be just a very nice day with temps starting in the low 60's and reaching the low 80's; but with no humidity. There was lots of sunshine and blue skies and we made the most of it with outside play, golf cart rides, butterfly catching, hiking and horseback riding.
The morning started with a sleep in until 7:30 for the kiddo's and an hour or so later for Bob and Jill. We had dippy, scrambled and egg omelette's for breakfast and forgot that Nancy had promised to make chocolate chip cookies for later in the day so we had to borrow and egg from our mountain top neighbors the Browning. Our chickens next door went on strike for a day or so. Bob and Jill got ready to head out for a lunch date and antique shopping in Galax and Sparta. I took Ann's and Gabe to visit Zeke on top of the mountain in the golf cart and to get an egg for the cookies. We had a pleasant visit and the kiddos looked for newts on the way down the mountain. We found a couple small tree frogs which gave them a thrill.
I pulled out the old swing from the shed and set it up on the front porch as they really enjoyed swinging on the Browning's porch swing. It was close to lunch time so hot dogs were on the menu as the kiddos put in their order. We ate outside on the porch and Gabe sat in his dads wagon he had as a kid and ate. Ann's was busy not only catching butterflies by hand(3) but setting up a butterfly trap and hotel. What an imagination and always planning ahead mind. After lunch Nancy had them help her make cookies and then Gabe went down for a long nap. Ann's worked on her project all afternoon while scouring the garden for butter flies.
I managed to loosen up the wet soil again around what plants are still living in the gardens. Water continues to run off the mountain down into our gully but has slowed to just a trinkle. The grass is really starting to grown with the warm sunshine today. Bob and Jill got back and we decided to eat an early supper due to his horse back riding appointment around 7. Bob, myself and Sugar headed to the top of the mountain for a quick hike before we started on supper. We grilled marinated chicken breasts along with green beans and a fresh salad. While grilling we were shooting the BB gun and Gabe was standing on a stool to see over the deck railing when he slipped and scrapped the back of his leg. It left a red abrasion and he was inconsolable for quite awhile so it was decided
that just Bob and I would go to do the horseback riding as Ann's didn't want to go either.
We met up with Karin at her house and followed her to where Katelyn had her horse Confetti pastured. It was such a beautiful evening and Bob had a great time riding and the gals were gracious in fulfilling one of the highlights of his vacation. Afterwards we headed to Ms. Helen's our "mountain mom" for a short visit. She held Bob as well as Amy in her arms when they were infants and has been a life long friend to our family. It was good for him to see and hug her as we never could get the kiddos over that way for a visit.
It was dark by the time we got back to the cabin and Jill and Nancy had bathed and put the kiddos to bed. Well they are leaving for Florida this morning(Friday) after what seemed like such a short visit. I will enclose some pictures from the day's activities, LATER
