Well the rain hasn't stopped for several days now, luckily it's a soaking rain and not a gully washer or we would be like the Charleston area a few weeks back with some flooding. The creek behind the cabin hasn't started to run yet that flows down from the top of the mountain, but I look for it to start soon if we don't get a break in this weather. My wishes would be for the western part of the country to receive a little of this wet weather especially the Lake Tahoe area, oh well!! We spent the day inside except for our trip over to Independence, Va for Nancy's doctors appointment with Dr. K. We actually saw the sunshine briefly and the temp's rose to a short sleeve weather. That was short lived as we headed back over the mountain to Sparta where the drizzle and fog blanked out the mountains.
We have decided since the forecast is for much the same that we would leave a day earlier than planned as more rain is in the forecast for Saturday after a supposedly break on Friday. We might as well leave and head south for some sunshine and warmer temps as all of this wet weather, gray skies and the inability to get outside is leaving us with our spirits somewhat rusty, oh well. We have lots to do when we get back to Florida with Nancy's mom operation, grand babies to love up on and a garden to get in the ground. We might as well sign off on the mountains until next summer.
We did get a few piddly inside jobs done before heading out to town where we had several stops along the way. I actually got out and walked in Va. while Nancy was seeing the Doc. It felt good to have the sun on my face and while the leaves have left most of the trees this rain has really greened up the grass. The area where I sowed grass a week or so ago is up a couple inches as well. We always need rain but maybe not so many days in a row. The small town of Independence is quaint and nestled in the mountains. The road over to there from Sparta runs along side a small creek which is dotted with small farms. This creek eventually empties into the much larger New River which we often canoe and kayak on during the summer months.
Well the fog has just settled in as I make this post and I can barely see off the back porch, (much like the name of the road that leads into here, Foggy Mountain Road) yikes are we ever tired of this wet weather at least the warm temps have helped to keep the cabin snug with all of this dampness. We got back to the cabin around 3:30 and then I gave neighbor Gerald a hand with moving some furniture into his place before heading back up the hill. The rain had nearly stopped with just a heavy mist so I headed up through the backwoods to get in a small hike. That break lasted about 15 minutes so I wasn't able to get to the top but did get the respirations up for a short workout.
We settled into listening to some old country music after I read Willie Nelson's autobiography and is he ever the song writer and singer. He really is a very talented musician and we listen to some of the artists who were made popular from the songs he wrote and one in particular from my hometown of Winchester, Va. the late great Patsy Cline with the song, Crazy. I pulled some carrots from the garden which were still small but very tender and flavorable and along with some garlic pasta and a grilled Salmon fillet we ate healthy and well. After the cleanup we settled into the Fox Cable News until it was shower time and then some horizontal lab for me around 10'ish, LATER
