Well for the next couple of days this ramble will be short and to the point as I'm having to stand up at the dresser and write. Seems the wireless router went kaput last evening so I'm having to connect directly to the modem which is on top of the dresser in the bedroom, oh well. We had some very major storms last evening with frog swallowers and gully washer downpours, lightning bouncing off of the hills and at times the power going out, Yikes this was a major storm with 2 1/2 inches of rain as well.
At first I feared the Internet was down completely but after a technical support person checked out our area for any breakdowns he ran a check and determined the router wasn't working; so I called Cisco and they to did several checks on the router and determined it was defective. What I did learn is that routers when inoperative such as ours is for 7 months at a time have a tendency to go belly up after a couple years. So I ordered a new and most up to date router which is not affected by the non use period of nearly 7 months we have here at the cabin. This new one is supposedly good for at least 6-7 years and is the newest model yet with great range, speed and compatible with all systems and devices. Needless to say it will be 4-5 working days until it gets here on the mountain. So we will be on the web from the bedroom while standing and looking at the wall, oh well!!!
Monday morning started with our son and his friends(and ours too) rising at a little after 5'ish for a nearly 2 hour ride to Greensboro for their flight back to Florida; we stayed up for the rest of the day and began stripping beds, gathering up towels and vacuuming. That kept us busy for a couple hours which helped to lessen the sadness that always occurs when family and friends leave. It was such a world wind weekend with the wedding, gourmet eating and game playing and the weather was perfect for the most part. I saw a few sweaters, light jackets and even a blanket wrapped around a few of the guests at times when the morning temps dropped down into the upper 50's.
We learned later in the day that all made it back home safely with a phone call from Bobby and some Face Book posts. It sure was quiet around here for the most part but we took a hike to the top of the mountain and saw our friends the Clines. We sat and chatted for a spell catching up on all the info on what's has been going on in the mountains in our absence. We haven't been able to complete our first hike together as we sat and chatted well into lunch time and we were hungry so we headed down the mountain for a lunch of leftover salad with grilled chicken on top. Yeow was that ever satisfying and delicious.
We spent the afternoon working around the yard and gardens and I fired up the chainsaw and started to work up the downed oak tree in the backwoods yard until a rain shower caused me to hang that project up for the day. I did manage to put in some posts in the lower garden for the fence my beans will grow on and then to stake my tomato plants. I'm staying away from planting any tomato's in the upper garden this year. The beets and kale seedlings have come back and are putting out new leaves but the slugs are having a field day eating them.(I probably squashed a hundred or more this morning as I made my walk around in the cool of the morning). They seem to be everywhere and just love these wet cool mornings. Luckily they die very easy with just the point of a stick into their bodies or under the toe of my boot. I'm not sure why they are so prolific this year and it's a shame they couldn't be eaten like escargot of which I find delicious, oh well. I don't think the birds eat these critters either!!
Well I must say I wasn't a very good fan of the hockey game last evening as after a shower between the first and second period I was nodding off; so I hit the sack as the third period began and the Lightning was down 2-1 to the B'hawks but Nancy woke me up when she came to bed and informed the Bolts pulled it out with a 3-2 win. Good going Tampa. Nancy is at a loss as she can't use her Ipad (with having no router)so she too will have to write from a standing position in the bedroom. Our prolific posts will probably be short and not often until we can relax at the dining room table looking out into the woods and gardens or on the porches, LATER
