Well Saturday was quite cooler than Friday but with plenty of sunshine and a strong breeze all day long. That breeze helped with me blowing the leaves out of the backwoods yards as long as I was blowing them in a certain direction. We headed out in the early afternoon for Cornerstone where we helped in the kitchen for the 10th Homecoming Celebration until 9:30.
We started the day with a sleep in until after 8. Those flannel sheets are the best on these cold mornings. It was 15 degrees cooler than Friday morning especially with the strong breeze. I started the day with a few quiet moments and then I was naughty with having a slice of apple pie with milk for my breakfast. I hate to see that dessert go to waste. I headed outside after posting this ramble to bright sunshine. I continue to do a little each day to make the cabin and the gardens ready for winter. I hung a load of laundry on the clothesline outside and wow what an awesome smell they acquire from drying in the sun and wind.
I fired up the leaf blower and once again had a nice windrow of leaves. I took the push mower and then mulched them down to half or less their size and then gathered them in a trash can for mulching the gardens. That kept me busy until it was time for our daily hike to the top of the mountain just before lunch. We saw no one on our trip but the views were awesome as the buildings in down town Winston-Salem were visible some 70 miles away. The leaf color was vivid as well and the peak seems to be over with many of the oaks now in full color. They are usually the last trees to color with their various shades of browns and the reds are now becoming rusts in color. Lots of trees on top are bare and now are displaying their total winter look.
I made a guacamole for lunch as I had 2 avocados that needed eating and along with some of Nancy delicious salsa we had a tasty lite lunch with tortilla chips. She had made a huge bowl of macaroni salad and chocolate cream pie to take to the homecoming supper for tonight. Speaking of the supper I've never seen so many homemade casseroles and desserts at one sitting. The church provides barbecue pork and chicken tenders and everyone else the fixin's. We fed close to 300 or so and still had enough left over for another sit down feed.
Nancy and I served in the buffet style line and it was continuous for nearly an hour before we were able to eat ourselves. Afterwards we headed into the large open worship center where we enjoyed some great music provided by our own Priority Blue Quartet. This is a blue grass gospel quartet with fiddle, banjo, guitar and bass guitar that make some awesome music. Afterwards we headed back into the kitchen along with others to put the dining room in order. I was in the sink washing dishes for nearly an hour and then we moved all of the tables and stacked the chairs for Sunday's service. These folks are so fun to work with and its almost a social affair as lots of different folks pitch right in to work.
Well tomorrow(Sunday) will be our last Sunday with these fine folks here in the mountains and we are scheduled to once again eat with the Dalton Family in the evening. I learned they were serving smoked fresh venison ham that Caleb their young 13 year old son shot with a bow and arrow a day or so ago; that should be some fine eatin' as well, LATER Nancy took these from the top on Yesterday.
