Well August is just about gone but the temps the past day or so have been high summer with the upper 80's after a cold snap a week or so ago. Crazy weather and again today its up near 90 for the mountains as we head off once again to visit our "mountain mom" Helen in the senior center in Elkin. Its about a 30 minute ride but at least there is a couple of places where we will shop before coming back on the mountain.
I had started the day with my usual before 6 rollout to my routines that begin with some quiet moments after posting this ramble to honor my lord, Jesus, give thanks for another day and to lift up several by name for comfort and healing. All seem to be holding with this post. It was another total work day for me as I'm still working on burning out that last huge oak stump, not only did I burn a ton of old wood from the woods but cleaned out some of articles that have been stored under the front porch for years. All of that plus tons of lighter knots kept the blaze roaring at times and I did reduce the stump down considerably but still have a ways to go. This stump is twice the size of the upper stump which is now gone and is below ground level and now covered up with dirt. I'll sow some grass seeds on the area.
I did my stretching on the back porch before heading out to check on the gardens and do my mile hike around the perimeter of the property. Once I did that I started the fire on the stump then headed in for a mountain breakfast of scrambled eggs, sausage gravy and biscuits as well as a whole tomato and jalapeno perpper cut up in the eggs. Wow, what a feast and I never ate a thing until 6'ish when we finished up the left over salmon and a huge garden fresh salad and the leftover apple sauce Nancy made from apples that neighbor Gerald gave us.
I burned and added old debris from the woods throughout the day as well as some sawed up logs from downed trees. The stump was on fire for over 12 hours and there is still another 24 to 36 hours of burn burn before its down to ground level, if I can estimate from yesterdays burn how many more hours are needed. I think I will once again start drilling holes to help with the burn as well which helped greatly on the upper stump. That wood is so hard I broke off two drill bits as well as two saw blades from my recip saw that also broke the shaft that holds the blades in place. I've used the chain saw but it dulls the chain after a few cuts, plus I don't want to tear the small chain saw up, oh well. This stump is like concrete in its hardness. Maybe I'll try a masonry bit with that thought in mine, oh well.
Well we both piddled around in the yards and gardens after supper as we were planning on a wellness visit with Billy on top of the mountain after open heart surgery about 10 days ago, but his wife Paulas said it wasn't one of his better days so we held off until a later time. We headed in about dark and I checked the internet until shower time around 8'ish and then read until 10, LATER
