Friday Morning

Well Thursday turned out to be a work day that saw us with lots of clouds and rain showers through out the day. I did some painting for our "mountain mom" during the morning hours then piddled around the cabin the rest of the day except for a couple of hikes; one of which we were about half way to the top then turned around due to rain and then we finally made the whole hike some where around 4'ish. We sat and read for a couple of hours on the porches as the light rain kept me from working outside.

I started the day much the usual with a little after 6 roll out. It's really dark outside at that hour and I'm sure the rain clouds made it even darker. I know now at 8 PM it really starting to get dark here in the mountains which is a sure sign Fall is on the way. It's Labor Day weekend and we should see lots of visitors to their cabins and summer homes here on the mountain. We saw where the new owners of Mike and Nancy's cabin had a large moving truck, trailer and pickup truck loaded with their belonging sitting in the drive. They must have gone back for another load as these vehicles were just parked there with no one around. We saw Grant Heaglar and a friend out on the trail in their golf cart. This is the first time we have seen him all summer and he mentioned he is retiring from truck driving in June.

I did my morning routines of a hot cup of green tea laced with turmeric, posted this ramble and then a few quiet moments before heating two leftover buckwheat cakes for my breakfast. I loaded up what I would need to paint Helens bathroom door and headed out for her place. The sun was shinning brightly but that would change around late morning to cloudy skies and rain showers. I did harvest a couple of cucumbers, bell peppers and a few tomato's. I took out a pack of frozen ground deer meat for our supper that Caleb had blessed us with and wow was that ever delicious as Nancy prepared it with fresh green pepper, onion and canned tomatoes much like a beef a roni sauce over pasta. I added a fresh cut up jalapeno to mine and wow what a superb dish. Venison is a wonderful meat and never leaves that fullness feeling you get from eating beef and there are no hormones or antibiotics as well. I have just enough leftover for my lunch today.

That was about it for the day. The inch of rain we had over night has sparked the zinnias flower bed and they are looking fantastic. I should get plenty of heads for next years planting. The orange marigolds from sister Dee's flower bed are up as well. The two different beans I sowed a week or so ago are looking great as well and I'm hoping for a fall harvest from both. I'm just amazed at the bumper crop of cucumbers this year and both set of vines are still producing especially the lower garden vines. I know I've harvested a couple of bushels of them and I think one of the keys is to pick them before they get too large.

We got a report from Amy about the hurricane that travelled just north of our home in Florida. There were lots of dead tree limbs on the roof and yard with incessant rain for hours. The power was out at our house but no damage, thankfully. It seems the storm just skirted the bay area once again but did cause the schools to be closed for another day. There was some flooding in low lying areas and of course many streets where under water as well. The storm tracker shows that Tallahassee will take a direct hit from the Cat 1 storm. Hopefully the outer areas of the pan handle of Florida will not suffer any real severe damage or loss of life.  We heard via the telephone from old friends the Hampton's who were checking up on our well being. We haven't had a chance to visit with them this year. They too have grand kid duty with three boys all into sports locally. We never seem to be able to get out their way. Walt is still having trouble with his breathing and Theia is still having back issues from her nursing days. They are such delightful folks and have always been very great friends to our family. I mentioned the banner cucumber crop and she indicated she would love some so when we head to Sparta this evening I want to bless them with some from my garden. Walt no longer can have a garden due to his breathing issues.

Well that was about it for the day. Nancy took her camera with us on our second hike and managed a few hazy shots of the views from the top of the mountain. I tuned into the Fox news and then watched a little pre-season football before a hot shower and then to the horizontal position with a new read by Ken Follett, LATER
